Abstract: |
In order to improve the properties of bitumen especially in asphalt application, polymers, nanoclays and composite of polymer/ nanoclay may be used. The main objective of the present work was to study the morphology of polymer (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) modified bitumen and particularly the effect of nanoclay (Cloisite15A) on morphology stability of polymer modified bitumen. Samples of modified bitumen were prepared using two different methods. In the first method, polymer and nanoclay were added separately into the bitumen and in the second method, polymer and nanoclay were melt mixed in an internal mixer with weight ratio of 2 to 1 at the first stage and then the resulted masterbatch was added as a modifier to bitumen. The morphology and its stability for modified bitumen samples were studied by optical microscopy immediately after preparation and after 24 hours storage at temperature of 163°C respectively. Optical microscopy results showed that at the polymer percentages of less than 6 wt.%, polymer rich phase was dispersed in the bitumen continuous phase while at polymer content of 6 wt.%, polymer rich phase and bitumen phase were co-continuous. Also the results showed that, when EVA pre-mixed with Cloisite15A and then was added to the bitumen, homogeneous distribution of the polymer rich phase in the bitumen was achieved and it led to the stability of the morphology of modified bitumen samples. |
