Abstract: |
In this research work, the effect of Nb addition on the formation of NiTi-based nano-crystalline powder by mechanical alloying of elemental powder was investigated using a planetary high-energy ball mill. X-ray diffaction showed that NiTi-based intermetallic compound was formed after 15 and 10 h of milling using initial powder mixtures with stoichiometric compositions of Ni50Ti50 and Ni50Ti45Nb5, respectively, i.e. Nb is beneficial to formation kinetic of NiTi intermetallic compound. In addition, NiTi lattice parameter decreases with Nb addition. Morever, Nb decreases NiTi crystallite size. The ternary milled product consisted of micron size (~5-10m) agglomerates of nano-sized (~20-100nm) crystallites. |
