Abstract: |
The microstructure and micro hardness of AZ31/AlN nano-composite surface layers, fabricated by friction-stir processing (FSP) were investigated. The layers were fabricated by friction-stir processing of AZ31 substrate pre-placed by nano-sized AlN with a mean particle size of ~35nm. Clusters of AlN powder were formed after the first FSP pass. Break-up of AlN clusters was resulted by applying further passes. An AZ/AlN nano-composite surface layer was achieved using a tool rotation and substrate advancing speeds of 1000rpm and 50 mm/min after three additional passes, respectively. AZ31 microstructure with a mean grain size of ~50m was refined to a mean grain size of ~8.4m by FSP. Further refinement to ~3m resulted by dispersion of nano-sized AlN powder; this AZ31/AlN nano-composite layer showed the highest Vickers micro hardness value of ~89 HV (much higher than 40HV of the as-received substrate). |
