Abstract: |
Silver nanoparticles are useful in areas such as superior catalyst activity, optoelectronics and surface enhanced Raman scattering detection, but the most important usage of the nano silver is due to its antibacterial properties. Recently, silver nanoparticles have been used in antimicrobial packaging for using in food industries. The antibacterial packaging materials can be prepared by various techniques such as direct incorporation and immobilization of antibacterial substances in packaging material, surface modification and surface coating, physical vapor deposition, plasma deposition, and wet chemical processes. In this study, the nano silver/polyethylene packaging films were prepared by a dip coating method. For this purpose, at the first the silver nanoparticles were produced by the chemical reduction of silver salt. Then the surface of low density polyethylene films was modified by corona discharge treatment, and finally silver nanoparticles were coated on the surface of the corona treated films by immersion in the colloidal silver solution. The effect of corona treatment conditions on the amount of nano silver coated on the surface of the polymeric films and on the release of silver ion from the nanocomposite films into aqueous media was investigated. The results showed that an increase in the power of corona treatment led to an increase in the silver content of the nanocomposite films and silver ion release in aqueous media. The fabricated films exhibited a controlled release of silver ion into the distillated water over 30 days at temperature of 4°C. |
