Abstract: |
Engineering ceramics have high stiffness, excellent thermostability, and relatively low density, but their brittleness impedes their use as structural material. However alumina-toughened zirconia composites (ZTA) are one of the most common ceramic composite materials with various applications like armor and hard coatings. Incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a ZTA ceramic might be expected to provide CNT/ceramic nanocomposites with higher toughness and high temperature stability. In this research, alumina-coated multiwall CNTs were used to prepare alumina/zirconia/CNT nanocomposites in order to improve sintering behavior and mechanical properties. First, alumina was coated on CNT by solution coating method. Then the coated CNTs were mixed with zirconia/alumina powders and formed into cylindrical pellets by uniaxial pressing. The samples were then sintered under neutral gass. The fracture strength was measured by ball on the three balls method and the toughness and microhardness of the samples were studied by Vickers microhardness test. The microstructure and phase assemblage were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffrection respectively. A crystalline structure was obtained after sintering. Also it was found that using coated CNTs, the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite was improved. |
