Nano structures such as carbon nanotubes, nanowires and nanorods recently have been studied comprehensively for their advanced physical properties compared to corresponding bulk materials. Consideration of surface and nonlocal effects in micro-scaled and nano-scaled materials is important for precise estimate of their behavior. In this paper the buckling of nanowires under uniaxial load embedded in an elastic medium has been studied based on the Euler-Bernoly model. According to the increasing the ratio of surface area to bulk at nano-scale, the influence of surface energy becomes significant and should be taken into consideration. The results show that residual surface tension and surface elasticity influence the buckling performance of nanowires. |
