Abstract: |
Starch is a natural polymer available in large amounts from several plant sources. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and starch nanocrystals (SNCs) are used along with sodium montmorillonite nanoclay (Na+-MMT). SNC was extracted from potato starch by mild acid hydrolysis. The PVA based nanocomposites were prepared by incorporation of 1-5 wt% of SNC and 0-6% of nanoclay. The main purpose is to study the effect of two nanofillers on the mechanical properties of PVA as a semi-crystalline polymer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) disclosed that the Na+-MMT and SNC nanoplatelets are well exfoliated and dispersed, and diffraction peaks disappeared below 10ºC. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves clearly point out that the Tg of the nanocomposites increases with increasing Na+-MMT/SNC contents in PVA. Tensile tests revealed that with adding of SNCs and Na+-MMT separately to pure PVA, Young Modulus was increased due to the uniform dispersion of Na+-MMT and SNCs in nanosize in PVA matrix and the strong interaction between PVA and nanofillers. |
